Myles Lewis-Skelly embarrasses Bukayo Saka for pace in Arsenal training session
With the first game of pre-season on the horizon, the Gunners have been ramping up their efforts in training in order to gain that match sharpness.
During a recent training video posted by the club, it is noticeable that Myles Lewis-Skelly was seen to burst past Saka during a counter attack – demonstrating the 18-year-old’s lightning speed.
Saka, as we know, is no slouch and often breezes past defenders with his speed. However, Lewis-Skelly left him trailing in this race and it is a trait that will excite supporters even further over the impact he can have this campaign.
Lewis-Skelly signed a new contract at the club securing his long-term future and will head into his first full season with the first-team full of confidence.
Lightning speed would not be something fans would associate with his game so far but it has just been proven that Lewis-Skelly has it in his locker when needed.
How Arsenal can use Lewis-Skelly’s speed more effectively
Lewis-Skelly impressed the footballing world last season with his composure on the ball in tight spaces and his ability in a one v one defensive situation.
His performances against Real Madrid were particularly memorable, however his speed can also bring a new dimension to Arsenal’s attacking plans.
Gabriel Martinelli is a player that thrives with the right partnerships around him, his best season came when Kieran Tierney was constantly overlapping him to enable more space for the Brazilian to roam.
Lewis-Skelly has begun his Arsenal career by inverting into midfield and being part of the build-up through midfield.
Arteta should now look at phases of the game where the 18-year-old can use his pace and get beyond Martinelli. It would give the opposition defences something else to think about.
