Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card against Wolves dominated the Premier League headlines after matchday 23.
Fortunately, Arsenal beat Wolves 1-0 at Molineux to ensure that Lewis-Skelly’s sending-off was not the be-all and end-all.
The issue was that it so nearly was, as a late Riccardo Calafiori goal ensured a hard-fought win for the Gunners in the West Midlands.
Despite being jubilant over his side’s win, Mikel Arteta remained brief when reacting to Lewis-Skelly’s red card, preferring to keep his true opinion of the decision away from the media.

Alan Shearer shares what he understands about Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card
After the 18-year-old was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Matt Doherty around 90 yards from Wolves’ goal, pressure was on Arsenal to get themselves out of a sticky situation.
It wasn’t the first time that Arsenal have suffered controversial decisions this season but, some believe Lewis-Skelly’s dismissal was one of the worst.
Ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett couldn’t believe that Lewis-Skelly was sent off for the foul, which was petulant but not overly cynical.
Since the moment the teenager headed down the tunnel, response to the decision has flooded in, with Alan Shearer the latest to comment.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer shared what he’s ‘heard’ about the decision with regard to Arsenal’s hope to appeal Lewis-Skelly’s red card.
“Listening to one or two reports would back up the [idea of] PGMOL by not going against it, saying it wasn’t enough to overturn it,” Shearer revealed.
“I’d be fascinated, that’s what I’ve heard, one or two things, so it’ll be really interesting to see if they back that decision.”
The pundit backed up claims flying around that PGMOL will not overturn Lewis-Skelly’s red card, describing the possible outcome as fascinating.
Shearer outlines four reasons why Lewis-Skelly did not deserve a red card
Arsenal fans were furious that Lewis-Skelly got sent off, which was unsurprising given the circumstance in which the teenager walked.
Prior to his dismissal, the left-back was having an impressive game against Wolves, handing Arteta with yet another possible absence if the Englishman is to serve a suspension.
Reacting further to the sending-off, Shearer shared four reasons why he believes Michael Oliver and VAR made the wrong decision.
“There was not one part of that challenge that reached the criteria for a red card, in terms of the force, the aggression, the pace, out of control, not any of the things. There’s not one bit that meets the criteria for a red card.”
Even former Spurs player Jamie O’Hara thought Lewis-Skelly’s dismissal was shocking, telling all that needs to be known about the mistake the officials made at Molineux.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will appeal the red card, in what will be a fascinating development after a remarkable decision.
