Former Chelsea star Craig Burley has backed Mikel Arteta to keep his job at Arsenal but does believe patience could run thin in the months ahead.

It comes as the Gunners look likely to miss out on the Premier League title for a third consecutive season of being challengers at the top.

With it appearing as though another campaign of close calls will see Arsenal miss out, the pressure is heaped back onto Mikel Arteta.

While the manager has played a huge part in the club’s rebuild, the next phase of the project will look to turn promise into trophies.

Many back the Arsenal boss, but there is a growing sense of frustration that the team just can’t quite get over the line.

Craig Burley gives verdict on Mikel Arteta sacking chance at Arsenal

While some Arsenal fans feared Mikel Arteta would resign in January, following a lack of investment in the market, others are hoping for a fresh start.

With Arteta signing a new contract at Arsenal a few months ago, it seems unlikely that an exit would be sanctioned after a difficult spell.

It’s something that former Chelsea ace Craig Burley discussed on ESPN FC when asked about the future of the manager.

He said: “They [the Arsenal board] will back him, they’ll back him again. I think they’ll back him again but then next year, if it’s faltering still, I think that’s when more questions are going to [be asked].

“I don’t think his job is under jeopardy at all because they have been the second-best team for a couple of years now but that has only got so much longevity I think.”

It certainly suggests the Arsenal owners are likely to stick with their man for now, though pressure will be on winning trophies in the months ahead.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal career so far with statistics and trophies won

It would cost Arsenal £26million to sack Arteta, if they were to make the bold decision to move on from the manager.

While he hasn’t been able to deliver the trophies many have desired over the past three seasons, his record speaks for itself.

The manager dragged his side out from mid-table obscurity and back into the Premier League title picture once more.

Arsenal have yet to secure themselves back as a regular in the Champions League, with this campaign only being the second since their long-awaited return – outlining just how quick the progress has been.

Arteta has backed Arsenal to keep competing, while he looks to add more to his managerial honours list than his solitary FA Cup victory.

It’s clear that the manager has improved the side and that he must also strive to take the next step and lift the big trophies at the club.
