Michael Owen thinks what Wayne Rooney has said about Arsenal is utter ‘madness’

Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen can’t come to an agreement about Mikel Arteta.

The pair might’ve been compatible on the pitch, but off it, their takes on the Arsenal manager are completely different.

Arteta has received criticism from pundits this season despite Arsenal’s incredible form, with one talking point being when his time could be up at the Emirates.

Rooney thinks Arsenal could sack Arteta if the Gunners don’t win the Premier League this season, a statement that some agree with and others deem farcical.

Michael Owen disagrees with Wayne Rooney on Mikel Arteta sacking prediction

“If they don’t win it now, then, you know, you probably see a change of manager if they don’t win it now,” Rooney said after Arsenal’s win over Crystal Palace in October.

This season represents Arteta’s fourth attempt at winning the title, and while Rooney thinks time could soon be up, Owen thinks the picture is much bigger.

Should Mikel Arteta be sacked if Arsenal don’t win a trophy in 2025/26?

Speaking on the Mennie Talks Podcast, Owen said that talk regarding whether no league title could cost Arteta his job is ‘madness’.

“It’s madness. It’s madness. Madness,” he began.

“They’ve built something from Wenger, where obviously towards the end it started crumbling down a little bit.

“They were way off it, and gradually he’s got better and better and better. That team now, his signings, the team, the way they play, the efficiency, there are some unbelievable players, that’s a proper team.”

Owen doesn’t always have logical takes on Arsenal, but this one was spot on, as he made Rooney’s and many others’ opinions on Arteta look comical.

Even an Arsenal legend thinks Mikel Arteta could be sacked

As Arsenal Insider sources understand, Andrea Berta is already working on a new contract for Arteta, making the external opinions even less relevant.

What’s frustrating, however, is that it’s not only rivals who have spoken about what the future could hold for the Arsenal boss, but club icons too.

Will Mikel Arteta become Arsenal’s greatest-ever manager?

Emmanuel Petit also thinks Arteta could be sacked if he doesn’t deliver silverware promptly.

“His last season, yes. For me, yeah,” Petit said in September.

“Come on, guys, we have to be honest, I like Mikel and the work he’s doing so far, but at the end of the day, you can splash money, we’re Arsenal. I’m tired of it. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of it.”

The topic certainly splits opinion, but to those in the Arsenal squad, there’s no one better than Arteta.
