Viktor Gyokeres was shocked by Ruben Amorim’s departure from Sporting Lisbon

Speaking to L’Equipe, Gyokeres has opened up on his time at Sporting Lisbon and in particular his relationship with Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim.

Arsenal’s season opener at Old Trafford could mark a full competitive debut for Gyokeres but the Swede spoke of his admiration for his former manager and the ‘shock’ at his mid-season departure.

On winning the Portuguese title back to back, Gyokeres stated: “It’s an amazing achievement, of course, Amorim played a big part in this, he was the one who really wanted me here and the style of football we played under him suited me very well. I can’t thank him enough.”

The Swedish striker then discussed Amorim’s move to England, he explained: “It was shocking at the beginning, it was in the middle of the season and we had games coming up.

“That never happened to me before. It was a surprise, but I totally understand his decision and there are no hard feelings from the team.”

Ruben Amorim got the best out of Viktor Gyokeres, Mikel Arteta must replicate

Arsenal will win the Premier League with Gyokeres according to pundit Andy Townsend and with his goal record it is hard to argue that he will bring a huge amount of firepower to North London.

Gyokeres was sensational under Amorim and the United boss really knew how to get the best out of him with players floating around him up top and feeding him quickly on transitions.

Arteta now needs to be taking note of how to get the best out of the Swedish striker. His record speaks for itself and Arsenal need to play to Gyokeres rather than the other way round.

The Gunners lacked pace and incision on the break at times last season but with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli fully fit on each flank, that can be the service that Gyokeres thrives from.
