Arsenal are preparing to announce the signing of Viktor Gyokeres imminently as the striker completes a medical in London.

Andrea Berta secured an excellent deal for Arsenal after weeks of intense negotiations with Sporting Lisbon.

The Gunners will pay an initial £55m to the Portuguese outfit and then an additional £8m in performance-related clauses – one based around the club’s qualification for the Champions League each season.

Brooke Norton-Cuffy has praised Gyokeres from their time together at Coventry and Mikel Arteta will be impressed with his new striker before a ball has even been kicked.

Viktor Gyokeres shows no fear in choosing iconic Arsenal shirt number

There is a lot of expectation on Gyokeres as he arrives for his first season in the top flight of English football.

Scoring goals in Portugal is one thing, but being as prolific in the Premier League will be a true test of the 27-year-old’s ability.

However, Gyokeres has chosen to emulate Thierry Henry by wearing the iconic number 14 shirt at the Gunners and this should tell fans everything about his character.

The Swede is not afraid of the responsibility that will be heaped upon his shoulders and by choosing the number 14 shirt, Gyokeres is making a statement that he is prepared to be the main man up top.

If he can replicate his goal scoring form from Portugal, he will go a long way to help secure Arsenal’s first league title since 2004.

What will be key to Gyokeres succeeding at Arsenal?

Myles Lewis-Skelly is excited about Gyokeres joining the club but the Swede’s new teammates have a huge role in helping him succeed at the Emirates.

Arsenal finally have a natural goalscorer to call upon and whilst Kai Havertz will certainly challenge him for the position, Gyokeres is the more clinical finisher in the big moments.

However, there is no point having a striker as deadly as Gyokeres without the right service and players such as Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka now have added responsibility to create chances.

Arteta’s side looked devoid of ideas at times last season and were seen as too methodical when teams dropped deep against them.

It is now up to the players and coaching staff to come up with a formula that is going to give Gyokeres the very best chance of doing what he does best – score goals.
