Arsenal were heavily linked to Matheus Cunha during the January transfer window.

The Brazilian looks set to leave Wolves in the summer, as he issued a come and get me plea with the end of the season in sight.

Arsenal made contact with Cunha in the winter market however, the forward agreed a new deal with Wolves, which included a release clause.

Now protected by a £62.5m release clause, Cunha is being evaluated by several clubs, with it understood that Manchester United are leading the way in the race for the 15-goal playmaker.

Andrea Berta mentioned in Matheus Cunha transfer update

Despite being a player who has contributed to 23 goals this season, there are some reservations about Cunha

Firstly, the 25-year-old has served two FA bans this term due to improper conduct, and secondly, there’s an argument to be had whether he would fit Mikel Arteta’s system.

With regard to the latter, it’s believed that Man United are the best fit for Cunha and what the player wants, which was something journalist Ben Jacobs recently discussed.

When talking to The Wolfpack Podcast, Jacobs explained that Cunha is sold on Ruben Amorim’s project, due to his ability to play as a number ten, something Arsenal aren’t looking for.

“Arsenal want a defined left winger, a number nine, and Cunha sees himself as a number ten. So, Manchester United have got the best pitch role-wise.”

What Jacobs also said was particularly interesting for Arsenal, as Andrea Berta’s role in Cunha’s career was outlined by the journalist.

“With Arsenal, Andrea Berta was, of course, the one who brought him to Atletico Madrid and also did the deal with Wolves, so he knows him better than most.”

Berta signed Cunha at Atletico Madrid and then sold the Brazilian to Wolves, opening the door for the sporting director to now play another role in the forward’s career.

Cunha wouldn’t fit in at Arsenal

After underwhelming spells in Germany and Spain, Cunha has certainly found his place to be in England.

The Brazil international has shown his worth since joining Wolves in January 2023, where he’s since contributed to 42 Premier League goals.

While the 25-year-old is a target worthy of any top six club, Arsenal are perhaps not the best-suited project for the Wolves ace to join.

The Gunners aren’t on the prowl for a number ten, despite Martin Odegaard’s poor season, as Ethan Nwaneri has shown what he can offer at senior level throughout his breakthrough campaign.

There’s no need for Arteta to disrupt the pecking order in the number ten role, which is Cunha’s best position and one that the transfer target can secure elsewhere.
