How Arsenal really feel about signing striker target Viktor Gyokeres as fresh transfer update emerges

As the January transfer window fast approaches, Arsenal will be considering how to bolster Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Sitting six points and a game in hand behind league leaders Liverpool is not where Arsenal want to be after 16 games played.

Being third in the Premier League table has put some pressure on Arteta to improve, with the need for silverware rife at the Emirates.

The January transfer window can present the Spaniard with the chance to address his squad, as Arsenal’s lack of attacking depth has become apparent.

Arsenal’s transfer stance on target Viktor Gyokeres

One player who might be out of reach in January, but a firm possibility for the summer is Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal have registered interest in Gyokeres for some time, with attention surrounding the forward rising amid his stellar form in Lisbon.

While the prospect of signing a forward who has scored 69 goals since joining Sporting in 2023 appeals to many, there’s an understanding that the Gunners have a different stance.

That’s according to Sami Mokbel’s update for the Daily Mail, where it was reported that Arsenal actually have some reservations about signing the Swede.

It’s said that despite the striker’s form in front of goal, Arsenal are reluctant to pay his £85m release clause due to his age.

Gyokeres will be 27 at the point of the 2025/26 campaign, making his price tag quite a risky commitment in Arsenal’s eyes.

Edu Gaspar had Gyokeres on his five-man striker shortlist at the Emirates but as per the latest update, a move looks to be less realistic.

Reservations about signing Gyokeres increased after Arsenal win vs Sporting CP

For some, reservations about Gyokeres came when Arsenal beat Sporting in the Champions League earlier this season.

Fans aren’t the only ones to have doubts over the Sweden international, as Troy Deeney doubted Gyokeres’ ability to deliver a Premier League title.

It was difficult to ignore the fact that the forward struggled immensely when facing William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, something that triggered alarm bells for some.

Now, it’s become clear that Arsenal have a similar view internally, with it suggested that the club aren’t overly convinced that Gyokeres would be the right hire.
