Arsenal are active in the winter transfer window and are looking to strengthen their attack.
The Gunners have lost Bukayo Saka to a significant injury. The Englishman is not expected to be back until the end of February, and he has left a huge void to fill.
Arsenal have been in need of a good striker for a long time too. They just haven’t been able to bring in a prolific number nine since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the club.
Fans are really hoping that Mikel Arteta will address that issue in 2025, and a new name has come out of the rumour mill.
Mikel Arteta wants to sign Mateo Retegui for Arsenal
Mateo Retegui is having a fine season in Italy at Atalanta.
The 25-year-old, who was born in Argentina but plays for the Italian national team, has scored 14 goals and provided four assists for La Dea so far this season.
Retegui has established himself as one of the best forwards in the Serie A this campaign, and his performances have caught the eye of several clubs.
La Repubblica claims that Arteta’s Arsenal and Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have a serious interest in Retegui and are even ready to pay €55 million to secure his services.
If Retegui’s name seems familiar to you, it’s because the Italy international played against Arsenal in the Champions League earlier this season.
The Atalanta star had a decent game, but he made the headlines for allowing David Raya to get the better of him – first by stopping his penalty kick and then producing another incredible save off the rebound.
It really was a ridiculous double save from Raya to deny Retegui, and the Atalanta star was withdrawn 20 minutes later. He was clearly disappointed.
What Jorginho has already said about Retegui
Jorginho is one of the most intelligent footballers on the planet.
The Italian is a fantastic role model to all the younger players in the squad, and he plays a big part behind the scenes. Many Arsenal players, including Ben White, think Jorginho will be a manager one day.
Back in March 2024, before Retegui had made a big name for himself in Italy, Jorginho told everyone that he sees a lot of goals coming from the striker.
“I think he has an important quality in front of the goal. He has an eye for the goal and is starving to score,” Jorginho said, as per Football Italia.
“He is young and has room for improvement, which I think is the most exciting thing for those who love football. He can do even more; it only depends on him.”
Perhaps Jorginho is the one who recommended Retegui to Arteta. But, we just can’t see a move happening in this window because Atalanta are challenging for the Serie A title.
