The January transfer window presents Mikel Arteta with the chance to bolster his Arsenal squad.
Arteta has been criticised for Arsenal’s summer transfer window, as the Gunners failed to sufficiently restock in a range of positions.
In an injury-laden 2024/25 calendar so far, the Gunners have been left incredibly short going forward, giving the Arsenal manager a decision to make this winter.
While Arsenal have been linked to several players, there’s yet to be an update on who the club could bring in, with one target’s future already decided.

Wolves latest on Arsenal’s transfer interest in Matheus Cunha
Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury has impacted Arteta’s options going forward and matters were not made easier as Ethan Nwaneri picked up an injury against Brighton.
The Gunners have been expected to sign a new attacker this winter, with Arsenal believed to be admirers of Matheus Cunha.
The Wolves star has lit up the Premier League this season but, that’s not good news for Arsenal, as the Old Gold have upped their pursuit to keep the Brazilian.
Wolves are ready to offer Cunha a new contract to deter January interest, with a move not thought to be on the cards this winter.
Added to that, the Telegraph shared an additional update detailing Arsenal’s interest, where Wolves’ stance was made clear.
Despite the fact that the Gunners have ‘shown some interest’ in the 25-year-old, it’s said that Wolves ‘never had any fears’ that their leading man would leave in January.
The Midlands side have been ‘close’ to agreeing a new deal with their number 10 for weeks, limiting Arsenal’s chances of signing him anytime soon.
Cunha would have been perfect for Arsenal
There are very few players who fail abroad and come to England and take the league by storm, but that’s the path that Cunha has taken.
After being ushered out of Atletico Madrid as a player shy in front of goal, the Brazil international was transformed at Wolves by former manager Gary O’Neil.
| Player | League goals |
| Matheus Cunha | 10 |
| Kai Havertz | 7 |
| Bukayo Saka | 5 |
| Gabriel Martinelli | 5 |
| Gabriel Jesus | 3 |
Already this season, the Arsenal target has 10 Premier League goals, more than any of Arteta’s forwards, telling of what he could have offered at the Emirates.
A dynamic and frightening player, Cunha has been compared to Dennis Bergkamp, which says it all regarding his fit to Arsenal.
For now, it’s back to the drawing board for Arteta, who must locate an alternative target in the January window.
