Arsenal fans react to ‘pathetic’ transfer rumour as long-term target resurfaces, ‘club’s finished’

The January transfer window has churned out another questionable transfer rumour at Arsenal.

Arsenal are unlikely to buy players in January, which was to be expected given how strong the squad looks following Andrea Berta’s fantastic work in the summer.

That doesn’t mean that the Gunners aren’t exempt from being at the heart of rumours, with the latest regarding a possible summer move.

Last summer, Arsenal were linked to Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United, and now, talk is swirling again.

Arsenal fans are fuming as Anthony Gordon is linked again

It was the Daily Mail who reported the Gunners’ interest in Gordon in the summer, and now, less authoritative sources claim that such interest is still there.

Gordon was seen as a player who could help Mikel Arteta in attack, but that was last year; this year, the Englishman looks like an entirely different player in entirely different form.

The winger who contributed to 26 Premier League goals in 2023/24 has slowly drifted away, which is why Arsenal fans are perplexed about being linked to Gordon again.

As the rumour caught on around multiple social media outlets, Arsenal supporters on X shared their thoughts.

“Can this club ever get an attacking signing correct? Another downgrade,” one fan wrote.

Another posted, “Eurgh. Need to be aiming higher, his output this season has not been at the level required.”

How much is an acceptable price to pay for Anthony Gordon in the summer, if any? 😳

Two supporters took aim at Arsenal’s scouting when it comes to signing attacking players.

“Our scouting especially in attacking areas is very very lazy and pathetic.”

Another fan agreed, “If that’s true, the club’s finished.”

Being a left winger, Gordon would likely arrive to replace Gabriel Martinelli, who has been linked to Real Madrid

For that reason, Arsenal fans don’t understand why Gordon would be targeted, given how similar his weaknesses are to Martinelli’s.

An X user asked, “A player who works really hard and had a promising season a few years ago, but failed to push on. Sounds exactly like the guy he would be replacing so what’s the point?”

“Don’t think this is an upgrade on anything we currently have. When we do move for a LW, it needs to be someone in that elite bracket, or with the potential to be,” another supporter agreed.

The word ‘pathetic’ was thrown around a lot in reaction to the link.

“Can’t get rid of Martinelli and go ahead and sign his English version. I’m sorry, that’s pathetic.”

Arsenal cannot pay what Newcastle United want for Anthony Gordon

The reaction might seem harsh, but, given the numbers that Gordon has produced this season, it’s unsurprising.

Arsenal are the team to beat in Europe, so they should be targeting players who can vastly improve a currently strong squad, which Gordon wouldn’t.

The Englishman’s form is a problem, but an even bigger issue is how much Newcastle United are understood to want to let him depart.

During the 2025 summer transfer window, TEAMtalk reported that the Magpies are demanding a fee in the region of £80m for the wide man.

The idea of forking out £80m for Gordon, who, at that price, would represent Arsenal’s second-highest purchase of all time, is unacceptable.

Thankfully, the talk is merely a rumour, with Berta having plenty of time to consider who the Gunners need in the summer.
