What Ian Wright has already said about Anthony Gordon shows why Edu Gaspar wants him at Arsenal

Iconic former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has heaped praise on Anthony Gordon in the past. 

Arsenal could make a surprising addition to their attacking contingent on Transfer Deadline Day.

Anthony Gordon has been linked with Arsenal in an unexpected recent revelation. However, Mikel Arteta will face a tough task in prising the winger away form St James’ Park, as Newcastle United are currently trying to tie him down to a new contract. 

Ian Wright wants Arsenal to sign a winger in what remains of this summer window though, believing that sourcing more support for Bukayo Saka has to be sporting director Edu Gaspar’s top priority. 

The Gunners have been linked with a host of potential additions in this part of the pitch. Raheem Sterling and Kingsley Coman are available to Arsenal, but neither fit with the North London club’s preferred age profile. 

Gordon would certainly represent an exciting addition, though, and is surely someone that Wright would love to see make the switch to the Emirates Stadium.

Ian Wright admires Arsenal target Anthony Gordon

Wright has hailed the Newcastle star before.

Speaking on his Wrighty’s House podcast back in April, the pundit said: “With Anthony Gordon, we are looking at a player who has gone somewhere and has blossomed.

“What Eddie Howe has done for him, his movement in off the line, his finishing, his energy. We are now looking at a winger who has firmly put himself in the picture for the Euros.”

Wright even claimed that Gordon was an issue for then-England manager Gareth Southgate, as he was providing him with yet another selection headache.

He continued: “Anthony Gordon looks like a problem. He is a problem. He is bringing seven out of ten performances every week… eight, nines maybe.

“His consistency has gone somewhere else. Eddie Howe has got to take a lot of credit for the way he has nurtured him into an England international.”

What Gordon would bring to Arsenal

There are several issues that Gordon’s arrival would address for Arsenal.

Primarily, the 23-year-old would provide additional strength in depth, and much-needed competition for Saka.

Whilst Reiss Nelson is currently offering cover for the winger, it is clear that Arteta has doubts about his ability, as he is so infrequently afforded meaningful minutes. On top of that, Fulham are pushing to sign Nelson. 

Gordon would also provide pace, something that Arsenal desperately need more of. Gabriel Martinelli is the only real speedster in the club’s attacking contingent at this time, and he is struggling to produce his best form.
