Mikel Arteta’s transfer talks with Cristhian Mosquera ends the Arsenal career of ‘world-class’ star

Arsenal are prepared to lose a number of established first-team players this summer in order to fund their squad rebuild.

Arsenal released twenty players at the end of their contracts, including Kieran Tierney and Jorginho, who have both signed for new clubs.

Nuno Tavares signed for Lazio on a permanent deal following a successful loan spell and he became Andrea Berta’s first official sale at the club.

Arsenal are in talks for Cristhian Mosquera as Mikel Arteta eyes another defender to add to his squad depth. That pursuit surely spells the end of one Arsenal career.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Cristhian Mosquera is bad news for Takehiro Tomiyasu

Jakub Kiwior will not be pleased talks for Mosquera but the Polish international is highly thought of at the club and was outstanding when he replaced Gabriel Magalhaes at the end of last season.

AC Milan want to sign Kiwior but the feeling at the Emirates Stadium is that they want to keep the 25-year-old to provide further strength in depth at the back.

However, the same cannot be said Takehiro Tomiyasu, who after suffering injury nightmare after injury nightmare at the club, looks finally set to depart following Mosquera’s transfer.

Tomiyasu is liked at the club for his versatility but with Mosquera being a right sided centre half, the Japanese international would no longer figure in Arteta’s plans.

Ben White labelled Tomiyasu as ‘world-class’ but the availability of the defender has always been the problem and now there simply is no room for him in the Gunners squad.

Arsenal face a struggle in selling Takehiro Tomiyasu

Tomiyasu will miss pre-season due to knee surgery and there is a fear inside the club that the 26-year-old will be unavailable until the end of the calendar year.

It would leave Arsenal unable to sell the defender until the January 2026 transfer window at the earliest and even then, it is unlikely teams would take such a risk after a long-term injury.

A short term loan spell would be a possibility however, Tomiyasu’s current contract expires next summer with the club having the option to extend by a further year to June 2027.

If the Japan international doesn’t get back playing soon, Arsenal may have to swallow a £17m loss on the defender.
